Justice Secretary Menardo I Guevarra said he expects until Friday, Jan. 7, the report on the Jan. 2 riot at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City where three persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) died and 14 others injured.
Guevarra said the report will be submitted to him by Department of Justice (DOJ) Undersecretary Deo L. Marco who has supervision over the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).
“Upon my directive, Usec. Deo Marco will submit his report on the incident with recommended courses of action within the week,” he said.
Last Jan. 3, BuCor Deputy Director General Gabriel P. Chaclag confirmed the death of three PDLs from gunshot wounds fired from improvised firearms.
Chaclag said that “violence from verbal heckling with adjacent dormitories at the East Quadrant until a gunshot was heard and started exchange of gunshots from improvised firearms (FAs).”
During the clearing operations, the BuCor recovered a caliber .22 revolver with live ammunition, an improvised caliber .45 pistol, two improvised 12-gauge shotguns (“sumpak’), and 16 bladed weapons.
Chaclag said two more improvised 12-gauge shotguns with live ammunition and a pistol-type weapon that can load 12-gauge shotgun shells were surrendered.
