Updates on tropical depression ‘Auring’

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has declared “Auring” as the first storm to enter the country’s area of responsibility this 2021.

Here are the latest weather updates:

2: 00p.m., Feb. 22

Tropical depression "Auring" (international name "Dujuan") has weakened into a low pressure area (LPA) after crossing Northern Samar, where it made its landfall over Batag Island on Monday morning, Feb. 22.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Auring fizzled out around 11 a.m., Monday prior to crossing Rapu-Rapu Island in Albay.

As such, PAGASA has lifted tropical cyclone wind signal number 1 in all areas in the country.

It may continue to move northwest to west and traverse the Bicol region, southern Quezon, Marinduque, and northern Mindoro in the next 24 hours, PAGASA said.

11:00 a.m., Feb. 22

The center of tropical depression "Auring" (international name "Dujuan") has made landfall over Batag Island in Laoang, Northern Samar around 9 a.m. and was already moving towards Albay-Sorsogon.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Auring has maintained its maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 55 kph.

As of 10:00 a.m., the center of tropical depression Auring was last observed at 30 kilometers northeast of Catarman, Northern Samar, and was moving north-northwest at 15 kph.

8:00 a.m., Feb. 22

Tropical depression "Auring" (international name "Dujuan") has started to move north-northwest and was already headed towards Eastern Samar on Monday morning, Feb. 22.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) last observed Auring at 205 kilometers (km) east-northeast of Maasin City, Southern Leyte or at 85 km east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar around 7 :00 a.m.

Based on the forecast track and probability cone, the tropical depression may initially make landfall over Eastern Samar in the next six to 12 hours as a tropical depression or low pressure area.

4:00 a.m., Feb. 22

Tropical depression "Auring" continues to weaken as it is still expected to make landfall over Dinagat Islands, Eastern Samar (southern portion including Homonhon Island), or Leyte in the next six to 12 hours.

It has maximum sustained winds of 45 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph.

"Auring" was estimated at 195 kilometers (km) east of Maasin City, Southern Leyte, while moving west-northwest at 15 kilometers per hour (kph).

1:00 a.m., Feb. 22

The center of "Auring" was estimated at 180 kilometers east of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, moving west-northwest at 15 kilometers per hour (kph).

It has maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

PAGASA said Auring may initially make landfall over Dinagat Islands, Eastern Samar (southern portion including Homonhon Island), or Leyte in the next six to 12 hours.

However, it noted that Auring will likely weaken further before it makes landfall "due to persistent high vertical wind shear associated with the surge of the northeast monsoon."
