Notwithstanding the expected effects of typhoon Odette, Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones decided to pushed through with all her scheduled activities in Negros Oriental this week.

“Despite the typhoon and the challenges we are experiencing right now, we still have to ensure that our teachers, personnel, and learners are being assisted in delivering quality basic education,” Briones said in a statement issued Saturday, Dec. 18.

In the aftermath of the typhoon Odette, Briones also checked the facilities and school buildings of the affected schools around the province.

Early this week, Briones along with other DepEd officials visited Negros Oriental to further strengthen the basic education programs in the province.

Among the highlights of Briones’ weeklong visit was the meeting with the Local Government of Dumaguete City on the conduct of the ASEAN Schools Games (ASG) in 2022.

DepEd and the local government of Dumaguete City agreed to proceed with the hosting of the ASG scheduled in November next year.

Apart from this, Briones also met with the Local Government of Canlaon City on the necessary actions moving forward for the newly-established Schools Division Office (SDO).

Meanwhile, Undersecretary for Field Operations Revsee Escobedo was tasked to visit the Olympia Elementary School on behalf of Briones.

Olympia ES is a Last Mile School in Bais City. Escobedo led the formal turnover of DepEd’s “early Christmas gifts” to the learners of the school.

Briones, herself, also led the “gift-giving” to the students when she turned over school supplies, school bags, and shoes to Polo Elementary School.

She also met the teaching and non-teaching personnel in Tanjay South Central School and Schools Division Office of Tanjay City.

Part of Briones’ visit in NegOr is the inauguration of the three units of three-story school buildings with 12 classrooms and the groundbreaking of the Central Visayas’ Regional Sub-Office.

Briones also spearheaded the first-ever “Gabaldon Heritage Week” at Dumaguete City National High School.

Even before the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Briones, 81, has been going around the country to visit schools especially in far-flung areas.

“After this visit, we will make sure to go to the other regions in the country to oversee the current situation in the area, and to monitor the implementation of the limited face-to-face classes, and other learning delivery modalities,” Briones added.
