Deputy Speaker Garcia: BBM candidacy 'doubtful'; not worthy of One Cebu support

Presidential aspirant Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s general support in Cebu province for the upcoming elections may not be guaranteed yet despite meeting with none other than provincial Gov. Gwen Garcia.

This came after Garcia's brother and Cebu 3rd District Rep. PJ Garcia—who is also the secretary general of the political party the provincial governor is heading, One Cebu—advised his party members not to support any political candidates "whose candidacy is in serious doubt."

In a statement to media on Monday, he particularly referred to Marcos Jr., whose disqualification petitions, he said, have raised "serious doubts" about his viability as a candidate.

He made the call to his party members as One Cebu, including the provincial governor, is yet to make a pick for its presidential candidate in the coming 2022 elections.

"As the secretary general of One Cebu and as a lawyer, I cannot advise my party to consider supporting someone whose candidacy is in serious doubt," said Garcia, a deputy speaker in the Lower House.

"Before the Comelec (Commission on Elections) and the Supreme Court shall have ruled with finality on the question of his disqualification, I cannot possibly ask the party, our mayors, leaders and supporters to exert efforts and expend resources for a candidate who might later on be disqualified,” he added.

According to Garcia, he already studied the petitions filed against Marcos Jr., and "speaking as a lawyer, they cannot be lightly dismissed as nuisance, especially those filed by eminent legal scholars like Chairman Monsod and former Supreme Court spokesperson Theodore Te."
