Grand Seiko and their noontime l(a)unches

If there’s something this prolonged pandemic has taught us, it’s to value time and what we do with it. And so one lunchtime last week became an exciting launch time, as we joined Grand Seiko from Japan as they virtually presented three new models of their watches. Timing-wise, given that it’s the holiday season, one couldn’t ask for a more fortuitous time to launch new timepieces and making them the ideal Christmas gifts.

Akira Sakairi, general manager for Asia Pacific and the Middle East, hosted the event and was visibly excited to present these three watches—bound to be iconic, and much sought after, timepieces of the near future. It was a relaxed, enlightening online event, and the enthusiasm of the media assembled for the launches was similarly evident. Grand Seiko is one of the more dynamic watch brands today.

Grand Seiko 44GS

First up, there was a limited-edition, modern reinterpretation of the 44GS, with its Hi-Beat 36000 GMT Caliber 9586. This time out, it's inspired by tasogare, the Japanese term for the twilight period, as day turns to night, and light and shadow co-exist.

There’s a unique grey dial with a Mt. Iwate pattern, as represented by the ridge lines of the mountain. No matter from what angle you look at the watch, the sharp edges are matched with soft lines that come together with great polish and care.

Grand Seiko Prospex Save the Ocean Asia Special Edition

Next, there’s the Prospex Save the Ocean Asia Special Edition, inspired by the oceans and coral reefs of Asia, Oceania, and the Middle East. You’ll love how it’s still the samurai case design, with the dial and silicon strap reflecting by the blueness of the seas, and the bright orange accent inspired by underwater coral reefs.

The watch supports marine conservation activities, giving back to the divers’ community. In particular, they’re tied up with a coral protection education program in Thailand - EEC Thailand, which stands for Environment Education Center Thailand.

Grand Seiko Presage Sharp Edged Series Limited Edition

The Presage Sharp Edged Series Limited Edition is highlighted by the use of the "gofun' color for the dial. This is a unique Japanese color which is best described as yellowish hue to an essentially white dial. This "gofun" color is only available in the Limited Edition.

A sharp and angular case construction is complemented by a rose gold color for the hour, minute, and second hands, as well as the indexes, all to harmonize with this special "gofun" color scheme. It’s a refinement of traditional Japanese aesthetics, suffused with a modern edge that’s really impressive.

This may be a lot of information to absorb, but the wonderful thing about it is how each watch will be so perfect for particular personalities, and individuals. That this was unveiled at this particular time makes it such perfect Christmas timing. It’s certainly Grand Seiko time!
