Filipino students graduate with highest honors at HK University of Science and Technology

Five Filipino students graduated with the highest honors at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), which held its 29th Congregation on Nov. 26 and conferred 2,552 bachelor’s degrees, 2,506 master’s degrees and 308 doctoral degrees.

They are Clyde Wesley Ang, Sedrick Scott Keh, twins Mark Christopher Uy and Matthew Johann Uy, and Kyle Garret Lee Uy, all Metro Manila residents.

Ang graduated with double major degrees in Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Technology, and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with minors in Robotics and Mathematics.

He received the HKUST Academic Achievement Award, the highest academic honor given by the university, and graduated with First Class Honors (equivalent to summa cum laude) and Dean’s List.

Ang is also a recipient of the University Scholarship, Chern Class Talent Scholarship, Overseas Exchange Scholarship, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government Scholarship Fund-Talent Development Scholarship and HKSAR Government Scholarship Fund-Reaching Out Award.

Keh graduated from HKUST with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Data Science & Technology with double major in Mathematics.

He received the HKUST Academic Achievement Medal, First Class Honors and Dean’s List awards. He is a also a recipient of Full University Scholarship, Overseas Exchange Scholarship and Chern Class Achievement Scholarship. He is currently enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University, taking up Master of Science in Machine Learning.

Mark Christopher Uy earned a Bachelor of Science in Data Science & Technology degree with a double major in Computer Science and a minor in Mathematics.

He was awarded the HKUST Academic Achievement Medal, First Class Honors and Dean’s List. He is a recipient of the HKSAR Government Scholarship Fund, Overseas Exchange Scholarship and HKUST Admission Scholarship.

His brother, Matthew Johann, graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Quantitative Finance with a double major in Computer Science and a minor in Social Science.

He received First Class Honors and Dean’s List, and is a recipient of the HKSAR Government Scholarship Fund, Overseas Exchange Scholarship, Student Enrichment Activity Fund and University Admission Scholarship.

Lee Uy graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Professional Accounting, and in Information Systems with a minor in Psychological and Behavioral Science. He received the HKUST Academic Achievement Award and First Class Honors.

This year, the HKUST awarded the Academic Achievement Award to 57 graduating students. According to the HKUST website, “The Medal is presented annually at the University Congregation. At least one medal will be awarded in each graduation year. As the selection criteria are fairly rigorous; only about the top 1% of the graduates will be awarded the Medal each year.”

The Filipino awardees received the award after achieving a final cumulative grade average (CGA) of at least 3.9.

When they were in elementary and high school in the Philippines, the five awardees represented the Philippines and won medals in different international mathematics competitions.
