Magnitude-4.8 quake hits Cagayan province

(PHIVOLCS)

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Cagayan province on Friday evening, Oct. 1, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs said the epicenter of the earthquake was traced at 11 kilometers (km) northwest of Claveria, Cagayan at around 8:48 p.m.

It was initially measured at magnitude 4.6 but Phivolcs later revised it to magnitude 4.8.

The earthquake was "moderately strong" at Intensity IV in Claveria, Pamplona, Sanchez Mira, Abulug, and Allacapan in Cagayan; Flora, Apayao; and Pagudpud, Bangui, Burgos, Pasuquin, and Bacarra in Ilocos Norte.

Meanwhile, it was "weak" at Intensity III in Amulung, Alcala, Santa Ana, and Santa Praxedes in Cagayan; and Laoag City, Batac, and San Nicolas in Ilocos Norte.

Phivolcs said it was slightly felt at Intensity II in Peñablanca and Tuguegarao City in Cagayan and Currimao in Ilocos Norte, while it was "scarcely perceptible" at Intensity I in Sinait, Ilocos Sur and Badoc, Ilocos Norte.

Phivolcs' instruments also registered the earthquake at Intensity III in Laoag City in Ilocos Norte and Gonzaga and Claveria in Cagayan.

It was also recorded at Intensity I in Sinait, Ilocos Sur.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic in origin, which means the tremor was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

However, Phivolcs does not expect damage to property or aftershocks due to this earthquake.
