Trekking activities in major sites in Negros Occidental have been temporarily suspended due to threats of insurgency and armed conflict in the area.
In an order dated Sep. 16, the Northern Negros Natural Park (NNNP) said its Ecotourism Site Destination, particularly the Tinagong Dagat/Danao, Sulfutura, Pandong Bato, will be temporarily closed to visitors until further notice.
NNNP, which is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, said they made the move "in the interest of the service and in order to ensure the safety of visitors, trekkers, porters and guides" following the insurgency that "took place in areas near the protected area."
However, minor trekking activities are allowed in the following:
1. Mayana Peak in Barangay Prosperidad, San Carlos City
2. Malatan-og and Kawa Waterfalls in Barangay Kumaliskis, Don Salvador Benedicto; and
3. Malisbog, Dumalabdab and Pulang Tubig Waterfalls in Barangay Patag, Silay City
The order stated it would take effect immediately and would remain enforced unless revoked and amended.
