A victory for the “Oops, I Did It Again” popstar may be on the horizon.

In a surprise move, Jamie Spears, Britney’s father, filed a petition to end the court-mandated conservatorship of her daughter’s estate.

Rolling Stone magazine reports that last Monday, September 6th, Mr. Spears filed at the Los Angeles Superior Court to end the 13-year long conservatorship of Britney Spears that oversaw the pop artist’s life from “career choices and personal and financial decisions.”

Said conservatorship has been a contentious topic for both Mr. Spears and her daughter. The latter has been public about her disapproval of the handling of her affairs and has said on the occasion that her conservatorship has been “abusive.” The issue has become a hot topic for Britney’s fans and supporters and is at the root of the “Free Britney” crusade.

“Ms. Spears has told this Court that she wants control of her life back without the safety rails of a conservatorship. She wants to be able to make decisions regarding her own medical care, deciding when, where, and how often to get therapy. She wants to control the money she has made from her career and spend it without supervision or oversight. She wants to be able to get married and have a baby if she so chooses. In short, she wants to live her life as she chooses without the constraints of a conservator or court proceeding,” the petition said.

It added that, “Mr. Spears has said, again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter. If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should get that chance.”

The filing of the petition, should it get approved, will mean that Britney will finally have control of her business and personal affairs and finances. Britney’s life has been under the conservatorship since 2008, mainly under the supervision of her father.

Last June, the 39-year-old popstar said that under the conservatorship, “she worked nonstop, was not allowed to get married” or even “have her IUD removed.”

Then in August, her father filed to remove himself from the conservatorship “despite him having questions on whether it would be in Britney’s ‘best interests’.” Recently, Britney’s lawyer accused Mr. Spears of “trying to ‘extort’ $ 2 million” to step down from the conservatorship, as reported by Rolling Stone.
