'Cavite Heroes of the Sea' lauded for rescue of 21 boat passengers off Corregidor Island


The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has lauded on Thursday, July 22, the eight fishermen who rescued at least 21 passengers from a capsized motorbanca in Corregidor Island.

Commodore Leovigildo Panopio, commander ng PCG District National Capital Region (NCR) – Central Luzon, expressed gratitude to the eight fishermen whom he described as heroes by ensuring the safety of the boat passengers.

They were Dexter Cerrero, Carlito Abia, Freddie Rodelas, Rellie Rodelas, Noel Paredo, Recardo Yango, Darwin Vellirade, and Cholo Tahimic. They were described as "Cavite Heroes of the Sea".

At least 21 passengers were on board a motorbanca, which departed Rosario, Cavite at around 10 a.m. en route Corregidor Island for leisure swimming last July 16. However, the motorbanca encountered engine trouble and battered by big waves, causing it to capsize.

Fortunately, eight fishermen aboard a fishing banca were transiting in the area and immediately rescued all passengers. Due to their swift response, all passengers were rescued. No passengers and crew members were reportedly injured during the incident.

“Ang matagumpay na rescue operation na isinagawa ng mga nabanggit na mangingisda ay patunay na likas sa mga Pilipino ang pagiging matulungin at handa silang ibuwis ang kanilang buhay, kung kinakailangan, para makatulong sa kapwa (The successful rescue operation carried out by the fishermen is a proof that Filipinos are naturally helpful and they are willing to give their own lives, if necessary, to help others),” Panopio said in a statement on Thursday.

Personnel of PCG Station Cavite ferried the 21 passengers from Amaya 7, Tanza to Barangay Wawa 2, Rosario, Cavite where they were received further medical assistance.
