LPA forms off Eastern Samar; 'habagat', ITCZ to bring scattered rain showers across PH -- PAGASA

A low pressure area (LPA) has formed east-southeast of Eastern Samar on Monday afternoon, June 7, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The LPA, estimated at 350 kilometers east-southeast of Borongan City, is embedded inside the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ).

PAGASA senior weather specialist Chris Perez said the LPA has a slim chance of developing into a tropical depression as of Monday.

However, scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the southwest monsoon or "habagat" and the ITCZ may continue to affect most parts of the country in the next 24 hours.

Perez said scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the habagat may persist over the northern and western sections of Luzon, particularly Metro Manila, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Bataan, and Zambales.

Biliran, Leyte, Northern Samar, Samar, Eastern Samar, Southern Leyte, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur may also experience cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the ITCZ.

PAGASA warned against possible flash floods or landslides due to scattered moderate to at times heavy rains in these areas.

LIkewise, isolated rain showers or thunderstorms may affect the rest of the country due to the combined effects of the southwest monsoon and habagat.

PAGASA advised the public to remain alert against possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms.

Perez said PAGASA on Monday has not issued a gale warning across the country's coasts thus fisherfolk and seafarers are safe to sail.

He noted that moderate seas are expected over the western coast of Luzon and light to moderate seas over the rest of the archipelago, except during the occurrence of severe thunderstorms that are most often accompanied by strong winds causing big waves.
