Attacks vs. gov’t website traced in Visayas -- NBI

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said on Wednesday, March 24, its probe into the source of the distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against the main Philippine government website “points to the Visayas.”

“May mga identified na kami (We have identified some of those behind the attacks),” said NBI Cybercrime Division (CCD) Chief Victor V. Lorenzo.

“May mga bandang Visayas. May mga links papunta doon (There are some in the Visayas. The links points there),” Lorenzo said.

But, he said, the NBI probe encounters difficulties due to government restrictions in response to the rise of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases.

“Kailangan mag-stabilize muna situation para makabyahe kami (The situation must stabilize first so that we can travel),” he pointed out.

On top of travel restrictions, he said the offices at the NBI headquarters in Manila have begun moving to Quezon City in preparation for the construction of a new NBI building.

Last March 11, Lorenzo vowed to identify and arrest those behind the DDoS attack against www.gov.ph.

“We are confident that we can crackdown the hackers responsible for the attacks kasi may mga previous incidents na (because there has been past incidents),” he said.

A group, Cyber PH for Human Rights, has already claimed responsibility for the DDoS attack against www.gov.ph which it explained was done in protest against the killings of unarmed civilians. It vowed to do more DDoS attacks targeting other government websites.
