PAGASA issues flood advisories for river systems in 9 regions due to ‘Auring’

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued general flood advisories for nine regions on Monday, Feb. 22 as some rivers may overflow and trigger flash floods in low-lying communities or landslides in mountainous areas.

The general flood advisories issued at 6:00 a.m. Monday will be valid for a 12-hour period.

Due to the possibility of light to moderate with at times heavy rains or thunderstorms, PAGASA advised those living near the mountain slopes and in low-lying areas of the river systems, and the local disaster risk reduction and management councils concerned to remain alert for possible flash floods and landslides.

The areas that have been issued general flood advisories include Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol region, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, and Davao region.

As of 4:00 a.m., Monday, tropical depression Auring was estimated at 195 kilometers (km) east of Maasin City, Southern Leyte.

It was moving west-northwest at 15 kilometers per hour (kph), with maximum sustained winds of 45 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph.

It is still expected to make landfall over Dinagat Islands, Eastern Samar (southern portion including Homonhon Island), or Leyte in the next six to 12 hours.
