'Auring' makes landfall over Batag Island, threatens Albay-Sorsogon area - PAGASA

The center of tropical depression "Auring" (international name "Dujuan") has made landfall over Batag Island in Laoang, Northern Samar around 9 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 22, and was already moving towards Albay-Sorsogon before noon.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Auring has maintained its maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 55 kph.

As of 10:00 a.m., the center of tropical depression Auring was last observed at 30 kilometers northeast of Catarman, Northern Samar, and was moving north-northwest at 15 kph.

PAGASA has already lifted tropical cyclone warning signal number 1 over some areas but remains hoisted over Sorsogon, Masbate including Ticao and Burias Islands, Albay, Catanduanes, eastern portion of Camarines Sur (Caramoan, Presentacion, Sagnay, Buhi, Iriga City, Nabua, Bato, Balatan), Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, and Biliran in its 11:00 a.m. severe weather bulletin.

Moderate to heavy rains may prevail over Northern Samar, Albay, Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, Masbate, Marinduque, Romblon, and Quezon, while light to moderate with at times heavy rains over Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Aurora, Rizal, Samar, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, and northern portion of Eastern Samar.

By Tuesday, Feb. 23, moderate to heavy rains may persist over Camarines Norte, Quezon, and Aurora, while light to moderate with at times heavy rains may affect Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Camarines Sur, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Isabela, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, and Batanes.

Under these conditions, isolated to scattered flooding, including flash floods, and rain-induced landslides are likely during heavy or prolonged rainfall especially in areas that are highly susceptible to these hazards.

Likewise, adjacent or nearby areas may experience flooding even in the absence of such rainfall occurrence due to surface runoff or swelling of river channels.

In the next 24 hours, the combined effects of the northeast monsoon or "amihan" and tropical depression Auring may bring strong breeze with occasionally higher gusts over areas where Signal No. 1 is in effect, as well as over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Aurora, Quezon, Marinduque, Romblon, Oriental Mindoro, Cuyo Islands, Cagayancillo Islands, Western Visayas, and the rest of Eastern Visayas and Bicol Region.

Rough seas may also affect the seaboards of areas under Signal No. 1, including the eastern seaboards of Central Luzon and Southern Luzon, southern seaboard of Luzon, and the remaining seaboards of Eastern Visayas.

PAGASA warned that sea travel is risky especially for small boats.

It said Auring will be at 45 km west-northwest of Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro by Tuesday morning.
