What’s Now, What’s New, What’s Next?

The Manila Bulletin salutes a new generation of leaders, thinkers, creators, innovators, and trailblazers in celebration of 121st anniversary

It’s a new world and, in celebrating Manila Bulletin’s 121st anniversary, we’re not taking a look at the past, we’re not taking a peek at the future, we’re looking at what’s now because what’s now is all that’s new and what’s now is all that’s next, all unfolding right before our eyes at speeds unencountered before.

We live in interesting times, when the game for some of us is changing faster than we can play it. As a result, we are, as we have always been, in a situation constantly evolving. At no point in modern history is adaptation more urgent than now when the young, in the Philippines and everywhere else on the planet, are demanding concrete action to address the world’s issues.

Interconnectedness, not to mention social media and the digital sphere, is magnifying each of these issues, leaving no room for ambiguity, anonymity, secrecy, or inaction.

Life is changed and, almost in one fell swoop, we have changed along with it. In this special anniversary issue, in celebration of 121 years of making a record of our time, the Manila Bulletin salutes a new generation of leaders, thinkers, innovators, artists, and creators in the Philippines, as they trailblaze new paths through life as we live it now.

More than the events of the past year, what is apparent as the next generation takes their turn in positions of leadership, in industries old and new, is a burning desire to make the world a better place.

This is the prime motivation now and, whether they are scientists, artists, inventors, designers, or entrepreneurs, this is their underlying mission, an advocacy embedded in their actions, decisions, and visions as they chart new courses, push boundaries, and create change.

Across all fields, from arts and culture to science and technology, from retail to travel and tourism, from education to sports, from agriculture to the food and beverage industry, new ideas abound and always these agents of change are hard at work to make things better not only in their companies, not only in their particular fields, not only in their industries, but also for country and countrymen, for people and planet.

The defining characteristics of next-generation leaders, as we have culled from this list of movers and shakers from a diversity of enterprises and endeavors, are the skills essential in navigating the challenges of the 21st century, a time marked by environmental vulnerability, social, political, and economic tensions, technological disruptions, and yes, constant change.

Transformational leadership is the call of our times. And we’re happy to witness so many young and younger Filipinos step up to the plate not only as masters of change and resilience and as pioneers of what’s next, but also as passionate souls driven to shape the world in a way that will benefit not only some of us but more and more of us who inhabit it today.

With these new players at the helm of a changing world, the future is now.
