12-year-old girl dead, two others injured by separate stray bullet shootings

The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported Friday that a 12-year old girl died after being hit by a stray bullet in Lanao Del Norte while two others survived the same ordeal in separate incidents during the New Year’s Day celebration.

In a statement, PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Ildebrandi Usana said that an “adult’’ survived after being struck by a stray bullet in the leg in Dagupan City.

He noted that the victim elected to have his wound treated at home instead of being brought to the hospital which Usana presumed was just a superficial wound.

However, the other stray bullet incident in Barangay Sta. Catalina Negros Oriental where the victim also survived was more serious as he was brought and is now recuperating in a hospital after being hit in the abdomen.

Usana said that the victim in the Negros Oriental incident was urinating when a stary bullet hit him.

He noted that the PNP got these incident reports from the attending physicians of the stray bullet victims.

The PNP did not reveal the identities of the stray bullet victims.

In the same statement, Usana said that Staff Sgt. Karen Borremeo of the Malabon police was nabbed after a concerned citizen reported that the policewoman was indiscriminately firing her gun at around 7:45 p.m last Thursday or hours before the New Year.

He noted that Borromeo turned over her firearm without resistance and is now being investigated.

The PNP spokesperson stressed that Borromeo will definitely face criminal and administrative charges for the infraction.

When pressed why Borromeo resorted to indiscriminate firing, Usana said that he assumed that she was probably drunk, or did that upon the egging of her companions or just did it without expecting of being apprehended.
