PH's 1st Cash-lite Community Powered by PayMaya and PLDT

Residents and workers of Barangay Namayan in Mandaluyong City can now enjoy cashless transactions in their community as the local government taps PayMaya, in cooperation with PLDT Enterprise. This is the first barangay-level "cash-lite" community initiative in the Philippines.

Residents of Barangay Namayan are now equipped with PayMaya-powered citizen IDs that both serve as an identification card and a payment card linked to the mobile phone. With this, citizens can use their PayMaya app and cards for everyday transactions such as buying from neighborhood stores, shopping online, sending money, paying for bills, availing of digital goods, and many more.

Barangay employees, meanwhile, can expect a safer and more efficient disbursement of their salaries as they are now set to receive their monthly pay through their own PayMaya-powered citizen ID card.

“Our collaboration with PayMaya and PLDT Enterprise becomes even more relevant now, given the need for safer contactless transactions. By encouraging the use of cashless technologies in everyday transactions in our barangay, we are building a safer and more inclusive community,” said Brgy. Namayan Chairman Victor Emmanuel Francisco Jr.

To further promote safer transactions in the community, neighborhood businesses ranging from food stalls to the local bulalohan can now accept contactless payments via PayMaya QR. These small businesses utilize PayMaya Negosyo, an app that allows MSMEs to accept cashless payments via PayMaya QR in-stores, as well as PayMaya Send Money and Bank Transfers online. With this, citizens can already use their PayMaya accounts to pay for their purchases contactless, reducing the risk of transmitting the COVID-19 virus through cash-handling.

Smart Padala by PayMaya agents are also present around Barangay Namayan to provide essential financial services to the residents – enabling them to send and receive remittance to and from their loved ones from all over the country, without having to travel far from their homes.

This partnership is in line with the common goal of PayMaya and PLDT Enterprise to power digital cities across the country and enable cashless ecosystems through relevant digital payment solutions.

Building a digital Mandaluyong

Mandaluyong City Mayor Menchie Abalos expressed support for Barangay Namayan and is looking forward to the roll-out of more cash-lite initiatives in the city.

“We’re happy to work with PayMaya Philippines and PLDT Enterprise as we launch the first barangay-level cash-lite community in the country, with our very own Barangay Namayan. We’re looking forward to digitizing more communities around the City of Mandaluyong as we provide safe, convenient, and efficient services to the rest of our citizens.” said Mandaluyong City Mayor Menchie Abalos.

“This project is very much in line with our vision of providing digital financial services to all Filipinos. Adoption at the barangay level signals an encouraging breakthrough at the grassroots. We are happy to partner with Barangay Namayan and the City of Mandaluyong for this trailblazing initiative,” said PayMaya Founder and CEO, Orlando B. Vea.

We’re excited to empower Barangay Namayan with relevant digital solutions that will aid them in bringing safety and convenience to their community, as we navigate through the new and better normal. This initiative is in line with our efforts to enable digital cities across the country and we’re looking forward to empower more communities,” said Smart CFO, PLDT Group Controller and Chief Sustainability Officer Chaye Cabal-Revilla

Prior to the launch of Barangay Namayan as a cash-lite community, the Local Government Unit of Mandaluyong has already launched initiatives utilizing cashless solutions in the city, also in partnership with PayMaya and PLDT Enterprise. In March, the City's public senior high school students have started receiving their allowance from the Local Government through PayMaya’s quick and efficient disbursement platform.

PayMaya is the only end-to-end digital payments ecosystem enabler in the Philippines with platforms and services that cut across consumers, merchants, and government. Aside from providing payments acceptance for the largest e-Commerce, food, retail and gas merchants in the Philippines, PayMaya enables national and social services agencies as well as local government units with digital payments and disbursement services.

Through its app and wallet, PayMaya provides millions of Filipinos with the fastest way to own a financial account with over 57,000 Add Money touchpoints nationwide.

Its Smart Padala by PayMaya network of over 30,000 partner touchpoints nationwide serves as last mile digital financial hubs in communities, providing the unbanked and underserved with access to services.
