This online platform will help parents teach their kids Singapore math

Distance learning can be a challenge for both learners and their parents. Now, more than ever, parents play a bigger role in their children's education, acting as teacher, lunchroom person, tutor, and of course, parent. A big stressor for many parents is helping their kids learn math. For a lot of parents, this can be a struggle as they are not confident about their math skills themselves.

V-DOSE Education is an online learning format that enhances learning through bringing the craft and knowledge of educators across various fields onto a visual storytelling stage. “These digital modules include short video guides and answer keys covering lessons taught from grade two to grade six for parents especially to learn the techniques, tip, and tricks that can help mastering Singapore math become a less daunting task,” says Marco Logregat, V-DOSE project director.

Its first product is a tutorial series of videos on the Singapore Math method, a highly effective teaching method developed for Singapore’s public schools that is currently used in countries such as the US, South Africa, France, and Saudi Arabia. The method focuses on helping students learn concepts and skills in-depth instead of learning by rote.

The modules were developed and are presented by Michelle Reyes, founder of My Study Partner Tutorial Center, My Study Partner Foundation, and representative teacher of V-DOSE Education. “The original intent of the videos is to harness the intent of the parent and the child when they’re learning math together,” she says.

Singapore’s education is considered one of the best in the world. The country earned the second spot for math aptitude in the Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) ranking for 2018. An educator for 35 years, Reyes adds, “The situation that we’re all in, it’s very tough. As parents, we all need to step up and do a bit more than what our kids are getting in school. Clearly, schools are adjusting. This is new to them. With hope, with the videos and answer keys that I have come up with, through our website, we will be able to help you teach your kids a lot more of math and… get them to think more. Singapore math is amazing and I wish when I was younger I learned it.”
