Typhoon approaching eastern border of PAR

A typhoon with international name "Haishen" continues to approach the eastern border of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) but remains less likely to hit land.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Haishen was 1,695 kilometers (kms) east of extreme Northern Luzon before noon Thursday with maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 160 kph.

Should it maintain its west-northwest movement at 15 kph, Haishen will likely be inside the PAR Friday morning. Once it enters the PAR, Haishen will be given a local name "Kristine."

PAGASA said Haishen is expected to move west-northwest Thursday, northwest on Friday through Saturday afternoon, and north-northwest Saturday night until it exits the PAR.

"It will remain far from the landmass and will head towards southern Japan and the Korean Peninsula after leaving the PAR," the State weather bureau said.

Haishen which means "god of sea" in China will continue to intensify in the next 72 hours and may reach its peak intensity by Saturday or Sunday, it added.

However, the tropical cyclone is unlikely to directly affect the country's weather condition or trigger rough seas throughout the forecast period.

PAGASA said the whole country will continue to have "fair" weather due to partly cloudy to cloudy skies except for some isolated afternoon or evening rain showers in the next few days.
