Western Visayas records highest number of COVID-19 cases in single day with 178

ILOILO CITY—The number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases further surged in Western Visayas Tuesday when it recorded 178 new cases, which was the most in one day to be posted in the region.

Dr. Marie Jocelyn Te, chief for emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases of the Department of Health (DOH-6), said the COVID-19 cases recorded August 11 surpassed the previous highest single-day of about 130 cases.

In a late Tuesday afternoon press conference, Te noted that 157 out of the 178 new COVID-19 cases were local transmissions.

The increase was particularly noted in Iloilo City, where cases swelled due to infections traced from the fish port and several call centers.

Based on DOH-6 data, Iloilo City posted the most number of new COVID-19 cases with 93.  It was followed by Iloilo province with 40.

There were also 23 new COVID-19 cases in Negros Occidental province, 12 in Bacolod City, three in Guimaras province, three in Antique province, two in Aklan province, and one in Capiz province.

Aside from the 157 local cases, the other positive COVID-19 cases were classified as 13 returning locally stranded individuals (LSIs), six frontline workers, and two returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
