‘Pepito’ places 21 areas, including Metro Manila, under Signal No. 1

At least 21 areas, including Metro Manila, were placed under tropical cyclone wind Signal No. 1 on Monday evening, as tropical depression “Pepito” continues to threaten Northern and Central Luzon.

In its severe weather bulletin issued at 11 p.m., Monday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has raised Signal No. 1 over Metro Manila, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet, La Union, Pangasinan, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Zambales, Bulacan, Pampanga, Bataan, Metro Manila, Rizal, northern portion of Quezon (General Nakar, Infanta, Real) including Polillo Islands, northern portion of Camarines Norte (Vinzons), and Catanduanes.

NTF: COVID-19 cases generally decreasing but isolated surges noted

The number of COVID-19 cases in the country is generally decreasing but there should be no room for complacency as select areas are experiencing a surge due to the relaxation of community quarantine status, the National Task Force (NTF) Against COVID-19 disclosed Monday night.

NTF chief implementer Carlito Galvez Jr. said among the areas with increasing COVID-19 infections were Baguio City in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR); and Ilagan City in Cagayan Valley (Region 2), which prompted Isabela Governor Rodolfo Albano III to place the area back to the stricter enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) from modified ECQ.

Duterte elated that PH is succeeding in fight against COVID-19

President Duterte is elated that the country is “succeeding” in the fight against the coronavirus outbreak amid the reported downtrend in the number of infection cases.

In his televised public address Monday night, the President lauded the improvement in the government’s pandemic response and credited “everyone” for exerting their effort to address the health emergency.

Enforce quarantine to crush pandemic, says WHO

Contacts of people confirmed to have coronavirus should be properly quarantined, the World Health Organization said on Monday, as the pandemic surges in Europe and North America.

WHO emergencies director Michael Ryan linked soaring transmission rates in the northern hemisphere to the failure to implement the vital step rigorously.

He said if he could have one wish, it would be to ensure “every contact of a confirmed case is in quarantine for the appropriate period”.

Catantan ready to help Penn State U

After skipping the first semester of school in the US, Filipino fencer Sam Catantan said she is ready to start her college life at Penn State University next year as part of the Nittany Lions in the US NCAA tournament.

The 18-year-old Catantan obtained her US Visa last Friday and said she is set to leave early January.

“Actually until now hindi pa nag-sink in sa akin,” said Catantan when contacted by Manila Bulletin Monday. “Pero sobrang grateful talaga ako na isa ako sa mga napili ng Penn State na mabigyan ng scholarship.”
