Razon-led East Zone concessionaire Manila Water Co. announced that it has completed six facility works that would boost water service in parts of Metro Manila and Rizal.

In a statement on Tuesday, March 25, Manila Water noted that it has upgraded the power supply in its Balara pumping stations 1 and 2 in Quezon City through smart power meters, which help provide stable and uninterrupted power.

“The upgraded power supply units allow for more effective and responsive control of the pumping systems, reducing energy consumption and minimizing downtime,” it stated.

Moreover, the ₱128.6-million San Juan pumping station 1 in Quezon City also faced major electric upgrades through a new 1,750-kilowatt (kW) generator set, expansion of fuel day tanks, and other automation works.

In Cubao, its pumping station reliability project was retrofitted through the replacement of its transformer unit to boost energy efficiency, minimize power strains, and prepare for the rising demand of water supply.

Beyond Quezon City, the ₱7.6-million Modesta pumping station in San Mateo, Rizal has been enhanced to improve the station’s performance in an attempt to meet the current and upcoming demand at the Silangan reservoir.

Moreover, the ₱92.45-million upgrades in Makati pumping station have wrapped up works to boost operational productivity, minimize carbon emissions, and improve water supply for its customers in Makati City.

“In addition to improving water conveyance, Manila Water has made significant improvements to one of its water treatment plants. The company has optimized Balara treatment plant 2 by rehabilitating its underdrain system, replacing effluent valves, and restoring the filter beds,” it stated.

“Completed in the third quarter of 2024, this ₱37-million project has resulted in a reduction in water loss by 0.2 percent, or approximately 0.05 million liters per day.”

Jeric Sevilla, communications affairs director of Manila Water, believes that these improvements would prepare for the demand spike in the coming months, and minimize the risk of power outages.

“These enhancements in our pumping stations are in preparation for the increase in demand as our customer base continues to grow. We are committed to providing 24/7 water service to our customers as we expand our reach,” he elaborated.
