When Carlos Edriel Poquiz Yulo first discovered his passion for gymnastics in 2007, he never imagined competing on the world stage. It wasn’t until he watched Japanese gymnast Kōhei Uchimura dominate the London 2012 Olympics that he set his sights on the sport’s highest level.

“Siya ang pinaka-idolo ko. Sobrang galing niya at gusto ko rin marating ang level niya (He is the one I look up to the most),” Caloy shares. “Doon ko naisip na gusto ko rin makapasok sa Olympics (That’s when I realized that I also want to compete in the Olympics).”

After making his Olympic debut in Tokyo 2020, Caloy realized that simply participating wasn’t enough — he wanted to win. Fueled by this ambition, he returned stronger at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he made history by securing two gold medals for the Philippines. His journey is defined by discipline, consistency, and an unrelenting pursuit of perfection.

“Gusto ko ipakita na ang gymnastics ay isang exciting and competitive sport at may potential tayo sa Pilipinas (I want to prove that Filipinos can globally compete in the competitive sport of gymnastics),” he says. “Ang goal ko, hindi lang sumali, kundi manalo at magdala ng karangalan sa bansa (My goal isn't just to compete — I want to win and bring honor to the country).”

Discipline, Hard Work, and the Right Support System

Beyond his rigorous training, Caloy has learned to apply discipline in all aspects of his life — including financial management. As a professional athlete competing worldwide, he understands the importance of planning for the future.

“Sa gymnastics, kailangan mong i-manage ang energy mo, ang time mo, pati na rin ang mindset mo. Pareho lang sa finances — dapat alam mo kung paano mo gagamitin nang tama ang resources mo (Gymnastics require proper management of energy, time and a well conditioned mindset),” he explains.

“Ang unang dalawang linggo ng training, grabe. Ang sakit sa katawan, pero kailangan mong tiisin (The first 2 weeks of training is challenging. I had to endure muscle pain),” he shares with a laugh. “Pero mas adjusted na ako ngayon, kaya balik focus na ulit (I have adjusted in the routine and more focused now).”

Aside from training, Caloy is also passionate about inspiring young athletes to pursue gymnastics. “Gusto ko ipakita na kaya nating makipagsabayan sa ibang bansa. Kung meron kang pangarap, sipag at tiyaga ang kailangan para marating mo 'yon (I want to prove that Filipinos are globally competent athletes. It takes both hard work and perseverance to make it happen).”
