Pinoy math wizards on a roll in international math contest


A total of 22 medals were won by 22 Filipino math aces in the 2024 International Mathematics Assessment for Schools (IMAS) conducted by the Taipei, Taiwan-based Chiu Chang Mathematics Education Foundation, Mathematics Trainers' Guild Phils. (MTG) head Dr. Simon Chua said.

According to MTG, the mentors of the participants, three of the aces won gold medals, three others got silvers, while 16 garnered bronze medals.

Chua named the gold medalists as Nathan Gohok of New Life Christian Academy; Heal Job Esio of Pangasinan Universal Institute and Shaun Lawrence Poh Leung of St. Stephen's High School.

The silver medalists are Liam Reign Chuco of New Life Christian Academy; Samantha Casey Mallari of Taguig Integrated School and Nathan Gabriel Neria of Grace Christian College.

The bronze medals came courtesy of Anne Dorothy Madrazo of Timoteo Paez Elementary School; Alistair Ivan Siohingco of St. Jude Catholic School; Alexandra Mierielle Benigay of Peniel Integrated Christuan Academy; Sabrina Louis Cheong of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Heintl Esio of Pangasinan Universal Institute; Ethan Liam Go of St. Jude Catholic School; Wyumi Gianina Ng of Grace Christian College;  Albert Steven Tan of St. Jude Catholic School; Annette Tiffany Yu of St. John's Institute; Andrew Lorenz Cabigon of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu: Jayden  Andrew Cobiankat of Grace Christian College; Ian Gabriel Hong of Pace Academy; Jarod Cobe Ng, Wynshanelle Ng and Janelle Caryl Ng, all from Grace Christian College, and Faith Caitlin Ng of MGC New Life Christian Academy.

They were cited during an IMAS awarding ceremony at the Philippine Cultural College main campus in Manila on Feb. 15.

The MTG said the first and second rounds of the 2025 competition will be held on March 8 and April 5, respectively.

The correspondence-type contest aims to "test middle primary, upper primary and junior secondary school learners' achievements in math problem solving, serve as a guide paper for students who wish to improve their skills in the field and challenge their abilities to broaden their mathematical scope."

The annual contest is organized by the IMAS Executive Council, chaired by Prof. Sun Wen-Hsien of Taiwan with Dr. Zhu Hua Wei of China as vice chair.
