President Marcos said he is considering extending the term of Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Rommel Francisco Marbil as the May 2025 elections draw near.
Marcos said there is a "very strong argument" to retain Marbil at least until after the elections.
"[T]here is a very strong argument that it would be – it would not be good for stability especially to change chief PNP in the middle of a campaign period and then approaching an election period," Marcos said in a media interview during the Tesla Center launch in Taguig City on Monday, Jan. 20.
"So, pinag-aaralan namin (we are studying it). But I think that is probably a very strong argument to keep him on, at the very least, until after the elections," he added.
Marbil, who assumed the PNP's top post in April 2024, is set to retire on Feb. 7, 2025, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 56.
A member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Sambisig Class of 1991, Marbil's tenure has been marked by initiatives on law enforcement modernization and crime prevention.
