Nigerian national arrested for cocaine, gun ban violation in Taguig


A Nigerian national was arrested by the police for possession of illegal drugs and a gun at a Commission on Elections (Comelec) checkpoint in Barangay Ligid-Tipas, Taguig. 

The unnamed Nigerian was found in possession of 3.83 grams of cocaine, 2.8 grams of dried marijuana leaves, a gun and ammunition. 

The suspect was arrested for violation of Republic Act 9165 (Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002), Republic Act 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act), and Section 261 of the Omnibus Election Code (gun ban).

The Comelec started implementing the gun ban on Jan. 12 for the May 12 national and local elections. It will be in effect until June 11. 

Unless authorized by Comelec’s Committee on the Ban on Firearms and Security Concerns (CBFSC), prohibited during the election period are the following: 

- To carry firearms and deadly weapons outside residence or place of business, and in all public places;.

- To engage the services of security personnel;

- To transport firearms and/or their parts, ammunition and/or their components, and explosives and/or their components and/or controlled chemicals.
