Canlaon City taps 100 individuals to help manage evacuation centers

BACOLOD CITY – At least 100 individuals will be deployed beginning Monday, Jan. 13, to help alleviate the workload of camp managers and personnel who have been working without relief for the past 31 days ensuring the proper care of Kanlaon Volcano evacuees in 10 evacuation centers in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental.

Edna Lhou Masicampo, city public information officer, confirmed that the four new team members from each government offices in Canlaon recently completed a two-day crash course on camp management to help them step into their new roles.

The training was originally set for five days but was shortened due to time constraints.

Masicampo acknowledged the challenges posed by the shortage of personnel at centers as no local replacements for camp managers have been provided until now.

“They’ve been exhausted for 31 days straight,” Masicampo said, adding that the move aims to give current camp managers a much-needed week of rest and restore staff capacity.

Some evacuees are reluctant to have their camp managers replaced due to the strong bonds formed but Masicampo said that the city government is working to ensure understanding.

Masicampo said that Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas has met evacuees to explain the situation and reassure them of the necessity of the decision.
