CEBU CITY – A 16-year-old Grade 11 student drowned while he and his classmates were swimming in a beach resort in Barangay Tuyom, Carcar City, Cebu on Monday, April 21.
Police Lt. Col. Ruel Burlat, chief of the Carcar City police station, said Mark was with a group of students who decided to swim at sea to celebrate the birthday of their classmates born this month.
They rented a cottage and set out to swim. They were reminded to stay in the shallow area but were seen frolicking 300 meters from the shore afterwards.
They headed back to shore but were struggling in the water on their way.
Some residents and beachgoers rushed to save the three students. Kim and Jade were safely rescued.
The victims’ parents told the police that they do not know how to swim.
Police said the resort didn’t have a caretaker or a standby lifeguard.
Mark was declared dead when he was brought to a hospital in Carcar, police said.
