Cañete ordered the ringing of bells in all churches under the diocese in honor and for the eternal repose of the soul of the pope who died at the age of 88 on Easter Monday.

"May we unite as one in prayer and contemplation during this time of deep mourning," Cañete said.

Pope Francis, you inspired many of us; you modeled ‘God’s mercy’. You brought many reforms to the Church. You championed the environment with your environmental encyclical ‘Laudato Si.’ And, what with your taking on the ‘smell of the sheep’ in ‘Evangelii Gaudium’! he said.

"Requiescat in pace, Papa Francisco."

Gumaca diocese covers towns in the third and fourth districts of Quezon.

The local government unit of Tiaong headed by Mayor Vincent Arjay Mea also mourned the death of the Argentinian pope.

Pope Francis is a model of humility, a voice of hope, and a mediator of peace. His leadership is an inspiration to all humanity. Thank you, Pope Francis, for your eternal legacy, a statement posted by the Tiaong Information Office said.
