VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur – The Ilocos Norte and Sur Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices are on heightened alert as a series of earthquakes rattled the two provinces in the past days.

Two moderately strong earthquakes were recorded and felt by residents of these two provinces and Abra on Friday morning, March 14.
Ilocos Sur PDRRMO Officer Rhon Arquelada said a magnitude-4.4 earthquake rocked the province at 4:25 a.m. with its epicenter located seven kilometers southeast of Magsingal town with a depth of 10 kilometers.
More than an hour later at 5:51 a.m., a magnitude-4.3 earthquake was recorded with an epicenter at four kilometers southeast of Magsingal with a depth of five kilometers.
No aftershocks were recorded from both earthquakes and no damage to properties were recorded.
At least 80 mild earthquakes were recorded in the three provinces from March 9-13.
Arquelada said intensified monitoring continues in all the towns and cities in the province, particularly coastal areas, for the possible occurrence of stronger earthquakes.
He said that they also strengthened the information and dissemination of safety tips in an earthquake to boost the alertness of residents.
Ilocos Norte PDRRMO officer Marcel Tabije said thery are maintaining their 24/7 alert level in the province to anticipate the occurrence of earthquakes.
