Wyn Power breaks ground on ₱1.5 billion, 50-MWp solar plant in Batangas

Wyn Power Corp. announced that its 50-megawatt peak (MWp) solar power plant in Batangas is set to begin construction works.

In a statement on Wednesday, March 5, Wyn Power said it broke ground on its ₱1.5-billion solar photovoltaic (PV) project in Brgy. Bukal, Taysan, Batangas, which spans across 48 hectares.

Once completed, the project is anticipated to produce over 74 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable energy annually and would be connected to the grid through a 2.3-kilometer line into Batangas Electric Cooperative II’s (BATELEC II) 69 kilovolt (kV) transmission line.

Rodel B. Arada, president and chief executive officer of Wyn Power, stated that the project will address Batangas’ growing energy demand by contributing additional capacity to the Luzon grid.

“This 50 MWp addition to the Luzon grid will significantly benefit industries and consumers served by BATELEC II and nearby electric cooperatives,” he said.

Aside from integrating more renewables into the power grid, Arada emphasized the project’s contribution to the local economy through job creation, tax revenue generation, among others.

“We stand tall that this project will be able to help the country’s renewable energy aspiration while providing much-needed employment in the countryside,” he added.

The solar project earlier secured a system impact study (SIS) endorsed by the Department of Energy (DOE), won the bid under the second Green Energy Auction Program (GEAP-2) in December 2023, and secured a green energy tariff of ₱4.10 per kWh.

Present at the groundbreaking ceremony were the DOE, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and local government officials.

DOE Assistant Secretary Mario Marasigan described the project as a “testament of the collaboration between government and the private sector under the successful GEA-2.”

Besides solar facilities and mini-hydro projects, Wyn Power has partnered with various companies such as leisure and tourism development firms LandCo Pacific Corp. and Global-Estate Resorts Inc., and industrial firm EEI Corp.

Wyn Power also partnered with Absolute Distillers Inc., Steel Asia, Aboitiz Land, Rockwell Land, SM Development Corp., and Nestlé.
