In today's modern world, architects and engineers are redefining what is possible. This project reimagines the modern workplace by blending innovation with the tropical environment. A groundbreaking event on Makati Avenue marks the start of the new BDO Unibank Inc. Campus by Foster + Partners, a British architecture international firm.

The Campus consolidates five urban plots into an integrated space centered on two high-rise towers. These structures frame a triple-height public area, providing shelter from rain and sun while featuring lush greenery and curated artworks that enrich the city’s public spaces. Luke Fox, head of studio at Foster + Partners, describes the campus as “a model for the next generation of flexible, climate-responsive workplaces in the Philippines.”

Connecting the ground level to the upper spaces, an elevated reception area leads to office towers and podium facilities, including a business center, public museum, and canteen. The museum showcases BDO’s art collection and temporary exhibits, fostering community engagement. Meanwhile, a 3,000-square-meter event space serves as a hub for client and community interactions.

Sustainability at its core
Sustainability drives the design. Lightweight structures reduce concrete use by 65,000 tons, while energy consumption is cut by over 40 percent. Radiant cooling systems and water recycling contribute to Green Mark Super Low Energy certification, positioning the campus to achieve Net Zero Energy status in the future.

Every setback on the towers features triple-story amenity floors with outdoor terraces, providing employees with panoramic views and relaxation spaces. An urban farm on the auditorium annex’s roof supplies fresh produce for the canteen, reinforcing a commitment to sustainability.

The façades integrate traditional and modern elements, with woven metal mesh screens inspired by local weaving patterns providing solar shading. At night, concealed lighting turns the buildings into softly glowing landmarks.

Roland Schnizer, senior partner at Foster + Partners, highlights the structural ingenuity: “The structure of the buildings is intentionally placed on the outside of their envelopes to actively shade the façades, while achieving an efficient structural design in a seismic zone. The exoskeletons create column-free spaces internally and support external solar shading screens.”

As construction progresses, the BDO Unibank Inc. Campus emerges as a symbol of innovation and responsibility, reshaping how workplaces interact with their environment and community.
