The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) unveiled plans on Friday, Sept. 6, to build three additional dams north of the Wawa Dam in Rizal province to improve flood management and optimize water resource use in the region.

During a situation briefing on the impact of Tropical Storm “Enteng” in Antipolo, Rizal with President Marcos Jr., DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan said that the agency is preparing a comprehensive feasibility study to assess the technical, financial, and environmental aspects of the proposed dams.

Bonoan said the study is essential for determining the project's viability and its potential impacts on local communities and the environment.

The new dams are part of a broader strategy to address persistent flooding issues in northern Rizal and surrounding areas.

Historically, the Wawa Dam has played a key role in flood control and water supply but has struggled to meet the demands of growing populations and increasingly severe weather patterns.

The feasibility study will assess construction costs, environmental effects, and the integration of the new dams with existing infrastructure.

It will also analyze how these dams will enhance the current flood control system, ensuring a cohesive and effective approach.

Bonoan emphasized the importance of the project in light of recent extreme weather events.

“Our goal is to build more resilient infrastructure that can better withstand heavy rains and reduce the risk of devastating flood,” Bonoan said.

“By strengthening our flood control measures, we aim to protect both lives and properties, ensuring a safer environment for all,” he added.

Construction of the new dams will proceed in phases, with each stage subject to thorough planning and oversight.

The project’s completion timeline will be determined once the feasibility study is finalized and approved, Bonoan said.
