Rabies-free community: San Juan LGU to hold free anti-rabies vaccinations, pet sterilization

To mark World Rabies Day, the local government of San Juan City is calling all fur parents in the city to bring their pets for free anti-rabies vaccinations and sterilization on Monday, September 30.

Mayor Francis Zamora said that spaying or neutering services, anti-rabies vaccinations, and microchipping will be available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Barangay Hall of West Crame.

Zamora also emphasized that the free services are open to all barangays in the city.

He added that services will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

For microchipping, only the first 300 pets will be accommodated.

“It’s the perfect time to give your furry friends the care they deserve while helping build a rabies-free community,” he said.

“Let’s keep our pets healthy, safe, and happy—see you there!” Zamora added.

According to the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC), a non-profit organization that aims to eliminate deaths from canine rabies, World Rabies Day is observed every September 28 and aims to raise awareness and accelerate efforts toward rabies elimination.

This year's theme is "Breaking Rabies Boundaries," underscoring the urgency to surpass limitations that hinder the fight against the deadly disease that causes suffering and claims both human and animal lives.

On September 27, the Department of Health (DOH) reported that a total of 354 rabies cases have been recorded nationwide as of September 14, and all confirmed cases are fatal.

The DOH continues to urge the public to “remain vigilant and proactive” in preventing rabies transmission.

“Rabies is preventable through timely vaccination of both pets and individuals who are exposed to the virus,” it stated.

“Individuals bitten by animals should seek immediate medical attention and, if necessary, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to prevent rabies infection. Vaccinating dogs and cats are the most effective way to stop rabies,” it added.
