TACLOBAN CITY – The provincial government has partnered with TAO Corp. to focus on a large-scale project to increase rice production in Northern Samar province.
TAO Corp. has identified 500 hectares of potential land for rice production, particularly in the municipalities of Laoang, Mondragon, and Las Navas.
With traditional rice varieties yielding one to two tons per hectare, the company plans to introduce hybrid rice capable of producing eight to nine tons per hectare.
The rollout of the project is expected to begin in November.
Julio Sy Jr., chairman of Tao Foods Co., expressed optimism about the potential for Northern Samar to become a major contributor to the nation’s rice supply.
"The Philippines is one of the world’s largest rice importers, but Northern Samar’s fertile lands and dedicated farmers present an incredible opportunity for local growth," he said.
TAO Corp. aims to empower local farmers by providing them with the tools and knowledge needed to improve their enterprises and increase their profitability.
By focusing on hybrid rice, local farmers are expected to see not only increased yields but also better market access and overall economic improvement.
