Lawmakers lauded for swift DOT budget approval

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has expressed gratitude to lawmakers for the swift approval of its budget, which lasted for only 30 minutes of deliberation.

"With this crucial push from our lawmakers, we are well-positioned to sustain the momentum of growth and elevate our country’s tourism standing on the global stage," DOT Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco said.

Sponsoring the DOT's budget, Rep. Faustino “Inno” Dy of Isabela underscored the sector's essential contribution to economic growth and its role in promoting Filipino identity worldwide.

"More than an economic driver, tourism is the heart that beats at the core of our identity as Filipinos," Dy emphasized, reinforcing the importance of tourism in national development.

Dy further stressed the need for continued investment in the sector, recognizing its transformative potential for national progress.

"2023 has shown the resilience of our tourism sector," he remarked, pointing out that over 6.2 million Filipinos are employed in tourism-related fields, contributing significantly to the nation’s GDP.

The proposed budget for the DOT and its attached agencies stands at P3.394 billion, with a substantial 83 percent—approximately P2.84 billion—allocated to the Office of the Secretary.

Key allocations include P384 million for the National Parks Development Committee, while the Intramuros Administration and the Philippine Commission on Sports Scuba Diving are set to receive P146 million and P25 million, respectively.
