A total of 18 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the Manila City Jail Male Dormitory graduated from senior high school.

In a statement, the Manila City Jail said the graduation underscored  the transformative power of education, even behind bars, that highlights the perseverance and dedication of these individuals to better their future.

“This initiative exemplifies the school’s commitment to inclusive education, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their current circumstances, has access to opportunities for personal and professional growth,’’ the Manila City Jail Dormitory noted.

Partnering with the ODB Montessori School, the Manila City Jail Male Dormitory stressed “that education is a powerful tool for rehabilitation,’’ adding that programs like “this senior high school curriculum aim to provide the PDLs with a renewed sense of hope and purpose.’’

“It’s not just about earning a diploma but also about fostering a mindset of continuous self-improvement and responsibility,’’ the Manila City Jail Male Dormitory said.

“This year's graduation ceremony was filled with emotions as each graduate proudly received their diploma, signifying their resilience and commitment to turning their lives around. The event was attended by representatives from the jail, the school, and various supporters who have been instrumental in making this program a reality,’’ it added.

The administration of Manila City Jail Male Dormitory commended ODB Montessori School for its role in delivering high-quality education to the PDL, and reiterated their ongoing commitment to expanding educational opportunities for more inmates.

“As the 18 PDL graduates embark on the next chapter of their lives, their success story will undoubtedly inspire others within the detention facility to pursue education and embrace change. The graduation stands as a reminder that with determination, opportunity, and support, change is possible, even under the most challenging circumstances.

The Manila City Jail Male Dormitory also pointed out that the PDL graduates' achievement reflects the growing movement towards more inclusive and rehabilitative correctional systems, where education plays a key role in reshaping lives and breaking the cycle of crime and incarceration.
