SMB, Meralco hope to build momentum ahead of Govs' Cup playoffs
At a glance
Playoff-bound teams Meralco and San Miguel try to close out their respective elimination campaigns on a high note when they tangle against separate foes in PBA Season 49 Governors' Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 20.
The Beermen take on the playoff-chasing Blackwater Bossing in the first offering at 5 p.m. before the Bolts battle the also-ran but fresh off a breakthrough win Terrafirma Dyip in the second game at 7:30 p.m.
Both SMB and Meralco are coming off a loss and are looking to get some sort of momentum before they head on to the crossover quarterfinals beginning next week.
Health, particularly on import Jordan Adams, is becoming a cause of concern for the Beermen after he complained of a hurting hamstring during their 122-112 loss to the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on Thursday.
Adams did not play in the last eight minutes of the contest and his availability against the Bossing is still uncertain. Should SMB decide to rest him, most of the cudgels should fall to the shoulders of the likes of June Mar Fajardo, CJ Perez, Marcio Lassiter and Terrence Romeo.
While SMB's all-Filipino crew looks formidable, it is expected to still have a tall task against Blackwater which has all the motivation to perform well against the Beermen.
As it stands, Blackwater is at the fifth spot with a 3-5 record in the Group B and currently jockeying for the last playoff spot with NLEX. Sweeping the last two games for the Bossing is imperative although they should also pray for a Road Warriors' loss to get a higher chance of advancing.
In the event of a tie between NLEX and Blackwater at the fourth spot, it would be the Road Warriors who will go to the next round due to a superior point differential.
And that's exactly why the Bossing led by high-scoring import George King Jr, along with Troy Rosario and rookie Sedrick Barefield are expected to put their best foot forward against SMB.
Meanwhile, like SMB, Meralco is coming off a 105-97 loss to Converge and another defeat would not be a good indication especially for playoff team that is likely to play either the Beermen, the Elasto Painters or the Barangay Ginebra Kings in the crossover quarterfinals.
Although playing against an already eliminated team, the Bolts led by Allen Durham and Chris Newsome cannot be complacent especially after the Dyip pulled off a stunning upset of Group A leader TNT Tropang Giga, 84-72, even without stars Juami Tiongson and Christian Standhardinger.
Playing without any pressure whatsoever, Stanley Pringle along with import Antonio Hester and rookie Paolo Hernandez are expected to pour it all out to give Terrafirma a graceful exit in the conference.
