Meralco braces for Tropical Storm 'Enteng'

Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has assured its readiness to manage potential power outages as Tropical Storm “Enteng” intensifies, bringing heavy rainfall to Luzon.

In a statement, Meralco, the country’s largest power distributor, recorded 28,256 affected customers with power interruptions in Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna Bulacan, Rizal, Quezon, and Batangas.

Because of the recent flooding, Meralco noted that there are 6,458 consumers without electricity, but assured that power restoration efforts will be made when floodwaters subside.

Joe R. Zaldarriaga, Meralco vice president and head of corporate communications, stated that the company is now actively monitoring the changing weather conditions to ensure a prompt response to any service interruptions.

“As a 24-hour service company, we are ready to respond to any trouble that affects our families,” Zaldarriaga said.

In case of flooding, Zaldarriaga listed down precautionary measures to ensure one’s safety.

This includes turning off the main electrical power switch or circuit breaker and being dry when using any electric utility, unplugging appliances from wall sockets and/or turning off connected equipment and light bulbs, removing dirt from service equipment or main circuit breaker, and securing its closure while wearing rubber gloves and rubber-soled shoes.

Zaldarriaga also reminded the public to make sure all wires, connectors, and other devices are completely dry and must be checked by a licensed electrician. Consumers must not turn on any appliance that has been submerged or damaged in flood.

Lastly, the public is reminded to make sure mobile phones, laptops, radios, and other devices are charged and ready to easily communicate with the Meralco personnel.

Those affected by power outages or other electricity issues may contact Meralco via its official social media pages or text at 0920-9716211 and 0917-5516211 and hotline 16211 and 8631-1111.
