In a grand diplomatic reception held in Manila on Sept. 5, 2024, Indonesia’s ambassador to the Philippines, H.E. Agus Widjojo, celebrated his country’s 79th Independence Day and marked a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and the Philippines: 75 years of diplomatic relations.
Addressing the gathering of esteemed guests, including Philippine government officials, diplomats, and friends of Indonesia, Ambassador Widjojo began by reflecting on the theme of Indonesia’s independence celebration this year: Nusantara Baru, Indonesia Maju, or "New Nusantara, Advanced Indonesia." The theme underscores Indonesia’s forward-looking vision, including the ambitious project of relocating its capital from Jakarta to the newly planned Nusantara City.
"For Indonesia and the Philippines, this year also marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations," Ambassador Widjojo said, emphasizing the strong ties that have developed since 1949. He pointed out that the bilateral relationship has thrived based on mutual respect and cooperation: "This milestone is not merely a reflection of our historical ties but a celebration of our shared values, mutual respect, and the enduring friendship that has flourished between our two nations."
Indonesia and the Philippines have enjoyed robust trade relations, with bilateral trade peaking at $14.39 billion in 2022. Although 2023 saw a slight dip, trade for the first half of 2024 already showed positive growth, reaching $5.7 billion. Indonesia has emerged as the Philippines' fourth-largest trading partner, while the Philippines ranks as Indonesia’s 10th largest. Widjojo expressed optimism for further economic growth between the two nations, noting the untapped potential that still exists.
In addition to trade, the two nations have enhanced their ties through cooperation in education and defense. "In the field of education, Indonesia and the Philippines have more than 180 active MoUs from 2021-2024," he said, citing the achievements of exchange programs and Indonesian scholarship recipients. On the defense front, the two countries have strengthened cooperation through the renewal of the Defense Cooperative Agreement in 2022.
Ambassador Widjojo also touched on the broader regional significance of the Indonesia-Philippines relationship, highlighting their roles as key players in the ASEAN community. "Both countries demonstrate a commitment to work together to address common challenges and seize opportunities in an increasingly complex global landscape," he said.
The event also featured the launch of the commemorative logo celebrating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties, a collaborative effort by the Indonesian and Philippine embassies. In a special tribute, the Indonesian Embassy presented the “Friends of Indonesia Award” to partners who have supported Indonesia's missions in the Philippines.
In a heartfelt message to the Philippines, Widjojo expressed his gratitude: "Thank you, Philippines ... for the continued collaborations and engagements, at all levels from government, private sectors, media, education institutions, and many other walks of life, to promote Indonesia, enhance bilateral relations, and ensure that our cooperation keeps obtaining many achievements."
The evening concluded with a toast to the enduring friendship between the two nations, as Ambassador Widjojo invited the guests to raise their glasses.
As Indonesia continues its journey of progress, the close partnership between these two Southeast Asian neighbors remains an enduring testament to the power of diplomacy, cooperation, and shared aspirations.
