Today, the nation marks the 67th birthday of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

The commemoration serves as an opportune moment to reflect on his accomplishments since he assumed as the country’s 17th president in July 2022 and what path he should tread moving forward.

Since taking office, President Marcos has made significant strides in various sectors, demonstrating a commitment to improving the lives of Filipinos.
Marcos has emphasized the crucial role of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the country’s economic growth. In 2023, OFWs contributed $37.2 billion, up by three percent from the $36.1 billion in 2022. To address concerns of OFWs, his administration has worked to resolve deployment issues and ensure fair employment conditions.

In the agricultural sector, Marcos initiated significant reforms when he initially assumed the role of agriculture secretary in the early stages of his administration. These reforms include measures to combat sugar hoarding and smuggling, and imposed a moratorium on amortization and interest payments for agrarian reform beneficiaries.

On infrastructure development, his administration has allocated significant funds for infrastructure projects under his administration’s Build Better More program, aiming to boost economic growth and improve public services.

To improve the quality of education, the Marcos administration has introduced new policies, including increased funding for digital learning tools, teacher training programs, and initiatives to improve literacy and numeracy skills among students.

Marcos has also strengthened the country’s international relations, focusing on fostering partnerships that benefit the country’s economic and security interests. His administration has worked to enhance diplomatic ties with neighboring countries and major global powers to ensure that the Philippines remains a key player on the international stage.

Aside from having taken steps to improve the lot of Filipinos, the Marcos administration should address, too, vital areas that need reforms and improvement.

Poverty and unemployment remain significant challenges for the government. The administration needs to implement more robust social programs to uplift the poorest sectors of society and provide more job opportunities for the unemployed.

The administration should also zero in on further strengthening the healthcare system, especially in rural areas. Ensuring access to quality healthcare for all Filipinos should be a priority.

The President should also focus on environmental sustainability. Addressing environmental issues and promoting sustainable practices are essential for long-term development. The administration should come up with policies that protect natural resources and mitigate climate change impacts. Striking a balance between economic development and preserving the environment is crucial.

His administration should also enhance transparency and reduce corruption within the government as this is vital in building public trust and ensuring that resources are used effectively for the benefit of all Filipinos.

As we celebrate President Marcos Jr.’s 67th birthday, let us be reminded that our collective commitment will enable his administration to build a brighter future for the country.
