In a statement issued on Saturday, Aug. 31, DepEd said that Education Secretary Sonny Angara observed a digital classroom session during a visit to the Khan Academy pilot school earlier this week.

Angara, together with Khan Academy Philippines, led by Chief Operating Officer Myrish Antonio, visited Fernando Ma. Guerrero Elementary School in Paco, Manila, to observe the Khan Academy session with its learners.

During the visit, Angara watched how Grade 5 learners integrated the Khan Academy application into their Mathematics lesson.

Angara thanked Khan Academy for the partnership and for providing free tools and personalized learning resources for Filipino learners.

“Thank you for giving us a glimpse of the future,” Angara told Khan Academy. “It is something to inspire and aspire to, and we will work hard toward it,” he said.

“You know, sometimes the most difficult part is how to get there, kaya pagtulungan natin ‘yan (that’s why we have to work together),” he added.

In the Philippines, Khan Academy provides free education through courses that are continuously updated to align with the current local curriculum.

It also integrates Khanmigo, an AI-powered tutor in English and Filipino that guides learners and assists teachers.

Khan Academy Philippines has committed to expanding access to digital learning resources for more students, allowing them to learn at their own pace both in and outside of the classroom.

Additionally, the organization aims to support teachers in developing lesson plans that feature engaging and enjoyable activities.

“You will see the possibilities when parents, school administration, and teachers come together to ensure that our learners have fun learning Math more and more,” Antonio said.

“This is a good first step and an insight into how students use Khan Academy integrated into their classes, as well as Khanmigo. We hope you will observe with an open mind and heart and also see the possibilities of what we can do together,” she added.

Khan Academy has expanded from 34 pilot schools to 373 partner schools, serving 130,503 students and benefiting 1,515 teachers.

On Aug. 5, DepEd and Khan Academy Philippines formalized their partnership to enhance Filipino students' foundational skills in numeracy and literacy through Khan Academy's online courses.
