1. Check Your Modem Lights

Your modem lights can provide crucial information about your connection status. If the LOS (third light indicator) is red, or if the PON light is green but blinking, this indicates a connection issue. Checking these lights is your first step in diagnosing modem problems.

2. Restart Your Modem

First things first:  try the classic "turn it off and on again" approach.  Restarting your modem can work wonders in refreshing your connection and fixing many minor issues.  Wait for 30 seconds to allow your device to fully shut off before powering it up again.

3. Inspect Wires and Cables

Loose or damaged cables can disrupt your internet connection.  Ensure all wires are securely plugged in and have no visible damage.  A quick inspection might save you a lot of headaches.

4. Choose the Right Connection: 2.4GHz vs. 5GHz

Your modem typically provides two WiFi options:  2.4GHz and 5GHz.  If you’re close to the modem, the 5GHz band offers faster speeds. For connections farther away, the 2.4GHz band provides a more stable connection.

5. Watch Out for Outages

Sometimes, connection problems are beyond your control, such as during service outages. Red lights on your modem may indicate such issues. Stay informed about outages through the GlobeOne app, where you can also report connection problems via the HELP section.

6. Manage Your Devices

Too many connected devices can slow down your internet. Consider the number of devices using your WiFi and the speed of your current plan.  Select a plan that aligns with your family's needs.  For families with heavy usage, upgrading to a higher-speed plan might be necessary. Disconnecting unnecessary devices can also improve performance.

7. Optimize WiFi Placement

Where you place your modem plays a significant role in signal strength.  For best results, position it in a central location within your home away from thick concrete walls that can weaken the signal.  Be mindful of potential interference from appliances operating on the 2.4GHz frequency, such as microwaves or cordless phones.

8. Secure Your Network from Unauthorized Devices

Regularly check for unauthorized devices connected to your WiFi to ensure your bandwidth isn't being shared without your knowledge.

Regular maintenance of your WiFi devices can help prevent potential connectivity issues and avoid replacement charges.  Take proactive measures to ensure a reliable and enjoyable internet experience.
