Army identifies slain NPA leader, wife


BACOLOD CITY – The Army 94th Infantry Battalion on Friday, August 23, identified the New People’s Army couple killed in a clash in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental on Thursday, August 22.

The fatalities were identified as Joan Lacio Encancion, alias Mark or Covid, vice commanding officer of Sentro de Grabidad (SDG) platoon, and wife Jolina Martinez Sergio, alias Chloe, political instructor of SDG platoon. 

The 94th IB reported that the couple was wanted for multiple crimes, including attempted murder and homicide. 

A proper burial in coordination with the local government unit will be given to the couple, and their families will receive the necessary support, according to the 94th IB.

The couple was killed by soldiers responding to reports on the presence of remnants of the dismantled Central Negros Front 2, Komiteng Rehiyon-Negros, Cebu, Bohol, and Siquijor in Sitio Pisok, Barangay Buenavista.

Lt. Col. Ziegfred Tayaban, 94th IB commander, said the successful operation highlights the unit’s continued dedication to safeguarding the peace and security of local communities. 

“With the support of residents and local officials, the military remains vigilant and committed to eliminating the threats posed by these armed groups, ensuring that civilians can live without fear of violence and extortion,” he added.
