ZAMBOANGA CITY – An explosion rocked the municipality of Tipo-Tipo in Basilan province on Tuesday night, August 13, days before the town festival mounted annually by the local government.
The blast, which happened within the vicinity of the municipal hall, destroyed part of the fence.
No casualties were reported.
Investigation showed that two men on board a motorcycle lobbed an item near the mini-gym which exploded after a few seconds.
The suspects sped away after the incident.
Tipo-Tipo Mayor Arcam Patarasa surmised that the blast may have something to do with ongoing preparations for the town’s Tipun Tipunan Festival later this month.
A military bomb disposal team is investigating the incident to determine the type of explosive used.
Days earlier on August 5, the military and Tipo-Tipo officials celebrated the declaration of the town as Abu Sayyaf Group-free.
