The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Maasin said the fire that killed three out of the five Decir siblings started past 10 p.m.

“Two of them were trapped while the other died while in the hospital,” said Senior Fire Officer 3 Lyra P. Villafranca, acting municipal fire marshal.

Two of the three victims had polio – the five-year-old girl and her four-year-old brother. “That’s why they were not able to escape,” Villafranca said.

Their one-year-old female sibling died while being treated in a hospital. Their 12-year-old and eight-year-old siblings survived and taken to the hospital.

Firemen took a while to respond as their house was in a far-flung barangay, more than 11.5 kilometers away from the town proper.

Investigation said their parents left them to attend to attend the wake of a relative before the fire broke out. Their mother allegedly forgot to put out a “dabok” (small fire) outside their house when they left.
