Even before Big Tech integrated AI into our lives, mobile phone companies have been using the term “AI” for many years, especially in camera features.
Now, OPPO is launching the Reno12 Series 5G, dubbed the "AI Phone," on July 12. It comes in two variants: the OPPO Reno12 5G and the OPPO Reno12 Pro 5G.
So, what makes the Reno12 Series 5G an AI Phone?
First, the upgraded AI Eraser 2.0 that allows users to remove photo bombers in the background. Users also get the AI Studio, which creates digital avatars for profile pictures.
The Reno12 packs a dual 50MP main camera system. One is for telephoto portraits. The other features a Sony’s LYT-600 Sensor with an All Pixel Omni-Directional PDAF. This means the All Pixel dedicates every pixel from the sensor to focusing the image. Omni-Directional PDAF detects contrast in all directions (usually focusing has one direction). This translates to improved focus with more flexible contrast detecting features.
The front camera’s MP is different between the Reno12 and the Reno12 Pro. Standard 12 has 32MP and the Pro version has 50MP. Both have AI Portrait, an autofocus feature to allow users to switch different zoom levels for the right frame. There’s also Natural Tone, which automatically changes exposure based on the scene users are capturing.
There’s more to OPPO’s AI phone than the camera. There’s what they call the AI LinkBoost, which is basically OPPO saying the Reno12 has Great—with a capital G—signal, because of having nine antennas. There’s also BeaconLink, which is a Bluetooth connectivity feature, and claims to connect to 200 meters.
The OPPO Reno Series is known for its innovation and performance, and the Reno12 Series 5G is no exception.
