Navy cadet falls to death at new Senate building in Taguig


A Navy cadet fell to his death at the new Senate building that is being constructed on Chino Roces Avenue Extension in Barangay Fort Bonifacio, Taguig on July 25. 

Based on a report received by the Southern Police District (SPD) from the Taguig Police’s Substation 1, the victim was identified as Reno, 23, a Navy cadet and a resident of Maguindanao del Sur. He was staying at the Naval Intelligence & Security Force (NISF) in Fort Bonifacio.

A witness, 24, who is also staying at NISF, told the police that at about 7 p.m. on July 25, he saw Reno enter the New Senate Building through Gate 1 of the construction site and ran towards the third floor of the building. 

He called the attention of the security guards in the construction site but they could not locate him. At about 9 p.m. two security guards at the site heard a loud sound of something hitting the ground. They saw the victim lying on the ground. 

In a statement, the Senate, through spokesperson Arnel Jose Banas, said, “It is with deep sorrow and concern that we confirm the tragic incident that occurred last night involving an individual who fell from the construction site of the Senate building along Chino Roces Ave., Extension, Brgy. Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City. We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.” 

“Senate President Francis 'Chiz' Escudero has been apprised of the incident. He immediately ordered a thorough investigation of the incident and a review of the security protocols in the construction site,” according to the statement. 

It added, “We have instructed security to recheck and tighten control of all entrance and exit points as well as the façade barriers to prevent unauthorized entry and loitering. The Senate is taking this matter very seriously. We extend our full support to the on-going investigation to find out the actual circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.”
