House Deputy Minority Leader Bagong Henerasyon Party-list Rep. Bernadette Herrera has called local authorities' attention to the needs of mothers and children in evacuation centers in the aftermath of Typhoon "Carina's" onslaught.

Herrera pointed out that these vulnerable groups often face unique challenges, including specific medical and nutritional needs.

“We need to ensure that evacuation centers are equipped to provide proper healthcare services, including prenatal and postnatal care for women and immunizations and pediatric care for children. Their well-being must be a priority,” she said in a statement Thursday, July 25.

The BH Party-list solon is known for championing women's rights and their welfare. Herrera authored the landmark 105-Day Expanded Maternity Leave Act, which extended crucial support to working mothers across the nation.

A veteran in the House of Representatives, Herrera has sought to address gender-based violence, promote equal pay, enhance women's access to education and healthcare, and support women's entrepreneurship via her legislative work.

Pointing to the extensive flooding caused by Carina, Herrera highlighted the need for long-term measures to enhance the country's disaster preparedness and resilience.

"We must pass laws that will bolster our ability to respond to and recover from natural disasters. It is our duty to ensure the safety and well-being of our citizens,” she pointed out.

Meanwhile, the ranking congresswoman acknowledged the tireless efforts of first responders, volunteers, and local officials who have been working around the clock to assist those affected.

“Their dedication and bravery in the face of adversity are truly commendable. We owe them our deepest gratitude and unwavering support,” she said.
