Pangandaman: Success is about character, values

Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Secretary Amenah F. Pangandaman underscored that having the right fundamental values and character determines an individual's success as she delivered a message of encouragement to the graduates of the Bulacan State University (BulSU) last July 19.

"Dear graduates, as you conclude your academic journey today, remember that the true measure of success lies not only in the degrees you have earned or the accolades you have received but in the character you have developed and the values you uphold," Pangandaman said.

In a moving ceremony, Pangandaman shared the stories of four Latin honor graduates who exemplified the values of perseverance, hard work, and love of family. They were among the 486 graduates of the BulSU Class of 2024.

"I am also thrilled to learn about this year’s commencement theme, “Sikhay,” a Filipino word to describe the values of enthusiastic hard work, perseverance, and diligence. The theme is truly apt for this occasion as it celebrates the culmination of all your hard labor, sleepless nights, and sacrifices," Pangandaman expressed.

She continued, "This word perfectly sums up your remarkable journeys as students. You, who did not take anything for granted but worked so hard and gave everything you’ve got to finish college. This is your story."

Pangandaman also highlighted the crucial role universities play in developing students’ critical thinking skills, which, she pointed out, are not only essential for academic success but also for navigating the complexities of today’s world. According to the DBM Secretary, universities serve as incubators for values such as integrity, perseverance, and resilience.

"This is also the reason why we give utmost priority to education.  As a testament to this commitment, we will remain steadfast in ushering in a new era of quality education in the country as directed by our beloved President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. under his vision of a Bagong Pilipinas," the budget chief said.

"Gagawin po natin ito dahil naniniwala po kami na sa bawat isang mag-aaral na nabago ang buhay dahil sa edukasyon, malaking hakbang ito tungo sa kaunlaran na ating inaasam bilang isang nagkaka-isang bansa," she concluded.

Prior to her attendance as guest speaker at the BulSU graduation ceremony, Pangandaman also served as commencement speaker at the Tarlac State University on the same day.

She was accompanied by DBM Undersecretary Wilford Will L. Wong and other university officials.
